Joanne Rowling, meglio conosciuta come J.K. Rowling, è una scrittrice britannica nata a Yate, nel Regno Unito, il 31 luglio 1965. È famosa in tutto il mondo per essere l’autrice della serie di libri di Harry Potter, che ha venduto oltre 500 milioni di copie ed è stata tradotta in 80 lingue, diventando la serie di libri più venduta nella storia.
J.K. Rowling ha iniziato a scrivere storie fin da quando era bambina. Dopo aver conseguito una laurea in Lingua e Letteratura Francese presso l’Università di Exeter, ha lavorato per Amnesty International a Londra. L’idea per Harry Potter le venne durante un ritardo del treno da Manchester a Londra nel 1990. Ha iniziato a scrivere la storia mentre era inseguita dalla povertà e dalla depressione come madre single a Edimburgo, in Scozia.
Il genere principale in cui Rowling scrive è la fantasy, anche se ha scritto anche romanzi gialli sotto lo pseudonimo di Robert Galbraith. La serie di Harry Potter comprende sette libri, pubblicati tra il 1997 e il 2007: “Harry Potter e la pietra filosofale”, “Harry Potter e la camera dei segreti”, “Harry Potter e il prigioniero di Azkaban”, “Harry Potter e il calice di fuoco”, “Harry Potter e l’Ordine della Fenice”, “Harry Potter e il principe mezzosangue” e “Harry Potter e i doni della morte”.
Tra i premi e i riconoscimenti che J.K. Rowling ha ricevuto, spiccano il British Book Awards’ Children’s Book of the Year, il Carnegie Medal, il Hugo Award per il Miglior Romanzo e il Premio Hans Christian Andersen per la sua contribuzione alla letteratura per l’infanzia. È stata inoltre insignita dell’Ordine dell’Impero Britannico per i suoi servizi alla letteratura nel 2001.
L’impatto di J.K. Rowling sulla letteratura è immenso. Non solo ha creato un universo narrativo che ha affascinato milioni di lettori di tutte le età in tutto il mondo, ma ha anche ispirato una generazione di scrittori.
